[ QUOTE ]
Just because people consider them greedy doesn't mean they actually are. Part of the definition of "greed" is "excessive," so greed is always going to be bad because it's always excessive. The problem is that "excessive" is a very subjective thing, so while one person will say X behavior is greedy, another will disagree.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think this is 100% correct (except that I think what counts as 'excessive' isn't always subjective).

In any case, there is a vast difference between acting in one's own interest, making money, etc., and being greedy.

yes, greed is horrible. Evidenced by all the wrongs that Bill Gates and Henry Ford have committed.

Anyways, to get this thread on to something better...

Greed is awesome, WHEN you are in a setting where you must cooperate in order to further yourself.

Greed is awful, WHEN you are in a setting where you can further yourself at the expense of others.

What the state does is it pushes the mythology that voluntary and peaceful interaction (i.e. the market) is of the second type. In reality, the state itself is of the second type and the market is of the first type. It is extremely ironic and tragic that people keep falling for it.

Yikes. You really do hold the market sacred if you think "the market" is universally a cooperative, non-exploitative endeavor. You do know that quacks and snake-oil salesmen show up in both sectors, right?

Edit: Come to think of it, the term "snake oil salesman" came about in the free market as a reference to people who tried to sell unregulated "medecine" that had no curative power. Go figure.

That charlattans exist is not an argument against the free market.

The alternative is to coordinate the charlattans and install them as rulers.

It is correct that I hold voluntary and peaceful cooperation sacred. The alternative is aggression, which is the field of:

Now:

Are you able to see through the state-sponsored mythology or not?

I'm not aware that either of them has/had excessive or rapacious desire for wealth or possessions. Are you sure you know what "greed" means?
