Assume you needed both a MLB and SS equally, and they are your top priority, and you had the 2nd pick in the NFL draft.

The top rated prospect is a MLB, and he gets drafted first.

The second rated prospect is a hypothetical tie between another MLB and a SS.

Is it correct to pick the SS, without hesitation, because you are getting the draft-classes "best" SS, as opposed to 2nd best MLB? Or does it all even out (because eventually in that draft, you'll have to pick an MLB anyway)?

[/ QUOTE ]

Why would this factor in at all?

[/ QUOTE ]

You're basically trading the 2nd best MLB prospect to another team for the best SS prospect.

[/ QUOTE ]

So what? The second best MLB may be better at his position that the best SS. What if the "best" SS still stinks?

[/ QUOTE ]

I said they are ranked equally to their respective position. WTF are you talking about? The SS is equally likely to be better at his position than the MLB. Why even bring this up?

[/ QUOTE ]

Bewcause you wrote in a way so goofy I didn't understand wtf you were talking about. I don't think where they're ranked at their position has anything to do with it. I think you look deeper in the draft and figure out which need you're more likely to be able to fill later and take the other one.

Yeah, this question is a litte silly. The answer is no, you don't pick the safety "without hesitation" because he is the best safety in the draft. There is zero logic behind that theory.

[/ QUOTE ]

Why not? Who do you pick? Is there an argument for picking the MLB in this situation?

Nobody else is having difficulty with the question. And again, you are looking too deeply into it. Stop thinking about whether or not the MLB performs better in preseason, or who is available at #34, etc..all other assumptions should be equal.

Really? Then why is everyone saying it's a dumb question?

No. You're trying to answer the question while ignoring the relevant factors. Why would you focus only on the factors that don't matter instead of the ones that do?

Storm,
To exaggerate for clarity, does anything change if you pick 5th and the first 5 prospects are MLB's, and the 6th prospect is a tie between and MLB and a SS?

Is there really an argument for taking the MLB here over the SS? (Assume you don't pick an MLB to convert him to OLB). Also, you can't convert the SS to another position, either.

Go to dictionary.com and type in the word Hypothetical.

EDIT: Colt, how much more info. do you need to answer the simple question? Who do you draft? The MLB, or the SS? It's a simple question. Who do you draft, and why?

You take the position that's less easily filled. If the draft is deep in SS you take an MLB. Rank within position doesn't matter, which is why we tend to see teams pick the same positions in the first round (QB, HB, WR, OL, DL)

Despite your wording making this difficult your question has a simple answer. No, you don't take the SS without hesitation.

Your pick is determined by the depth of the two positions, and the likelyhood that you would get a serviceable player in the second round.
How good is the MLB or SS that will be available to you in the 2nd round going to be?

This is discounting any possible trade or free agent moves.

If everything else is equal, I would rather have the MLB, as I feel it is a more important part of the defense.

In retardo world this criteria has been ruled out.
