Well, I'm "bigoted" against all religious people: since they choose to hold ridiculous beliefs, I choose to view them as ridiculous people.

Regardless of someone's beliefs, what gives you the right to look down on them?

[/ QUOTE ]

This is silly. I don't need to be given the "right" to form opinions about someone's beliefs. Do I have to respect the beliefs of holocaust deniers? Must I respect the beliefs of white supremacists? If not, why can't I judge religious people on the basis of their religious beliefs?

I don't hire people who wear crosses.

Some people in this thread seem to be using "Catholic" and "Christian" interchangably when there is a huge difference between the two.

iron, I don't think he's saying it's the largest group of bigotry, he's just saying that it's the only acceptable form of it because it's against the majority.

[/ QUOTE ]

What I'm saying is, when was the last time you saw a non-homosexual stand up for a homosexual that was the victim of bigotry. On the other hand, when is the last time you saw a non-Christian stand up for a Christian that is the victim of bigotry?

[/ QUOTE ]

Not a lot of Christians are victims of bigotry because they are Christians.

ooh enlightening. I think if anything, it's OP's use of Catholic that's most out of place. It's not like there's a ton of people mocking Catholics but being totally into Methodists.

Well said. I feel the same way about the poor. I mean WTF is wrong with the poor? They should really learn to make money.

huh?

IDK, I felt like responding to an asinine post with an equally asinine response.

Regardless of someone's beliefs, what gives you the right to look down on them?

[/ QUOTE ]
Your post was much more asinine that his. We most certainly agree that he has the right to view people as he pleases, but I don't think that was what you were going for when you said that. From the point of view of the atheist the religious hold beliefs that are not founded in reason or logic. As an atheist I don't really spend much time negatively judging theists, but I certainly understand why someone would. From our perspective there is not much different between Christianity and some random voodoo cult. I think there is a basis for the atheist to feel a level of superiority, whether founded or not, when they speak about someone with faith.
Just the same can be said for a theist who has held their beliefs their entire lives. Since both conclusions seem to obvious to the practitioner(theist and atheist) it's very easy to become pretentious when someone else does not come to the same conclusion you came to.
