Default Drive won\'t read DVDs

I got the blue screen of death last week and in the process of getting the computer to work again I had to reinstall windows. Before doing so I backup all of my data onto a few DVDs. Now that the problem has been fixed I want to restore the saved data. When I insert the DVDs into my drive though they are coming up as blank.

When creating the DVDs it asked me if I wanted to close them to make them readable in drives that weren't set up to read a certain way. I declined figuring that after reinstalling windows they would still be readable by my drive but obviously I suck and was wrong.

I'm not sure if this is just a matter of downloading DVD burning software that can read the disks as are, if the data is just lost, or if there is some other alternative.

Thanks in advance for any help as I have a lot of PT data, pictures, videos, and music saved on the discs that I would really like to recover.
