Default Devil Rays being babies

from espn:

[ QUOTE ]
Aug 5 - According to a report in the Boston Globe, outfielder Adam Stern or infielder Alejandro Machado is the player to be named in the trade that sent Javy Lopez from the Orioles to the Red Sox.

But Stern or Machado reportedly won't be joining the Orioles anytime soon because once both players are placed on waivers they will be claimed by the Devil Rays.

And once the players are claimed by Tampa Bay, the Red Sox will pull them off waivers, forcing Boston to keep the players until the end of the season.

The Globe reports the Devil Rays are incensed at the Red Sox for what Tampa Bay officials are convinced was illegal contact between Boston and the agent for infielder Julio Lugo, Dan Lozano, prior to the trading deadline, and before the Devil Rays traded Lugo to the Dodgers.

[/ QUOTE ]

i can't believe this is how they conduct business in the majors. i like what the tampa management team is doing with player discipline and roster management, but this is just childish.

You don't think the Yankees try and block players the Sox are going after and vice versa? The DRays feel like the Sox cheated them out of a trade and they're paying them back, or at least tried to. That's business

Right - doesn't anyone remember when the Yankees got stuck with Jose Canseco in 2000? It's not childish - it's business. Major League Baseball should probably alter the trade deadline so this sort of nonsense doesn't go on.

that is not the same at all. the red sox block a player the yankees want because doing so improves their own chances to make the playoffs. the devil rays blocking this trade will not affect that at all.

edit: to those who think the red sox deserve this, how professional do you think jose mesa is about handling his feud with omar vizquel? mesa actually pitched to him tonight, crazily enough.

They believe the Red Sox [censored] them in contract negotiations and trading, so they are [censored] them right back. I don't see where the problem is.

Regardless, not working these things out in advance causes the problems in the first place.

Trade before the deadline and you don't have to worry about players clearing waivers.

for those who are defending the move because "it's business", i want an explanation of how this is a good business move for the devil rays. they are pissing off two other teams who may harbor a grudge for a long time and refuse to make future transactions which would benefit tampa. what good can come of it? is it likely the red sox will ask for a devil ray in trade in the future, remember what happened, then not negotiate with him and decide to roll the dice, even though they would only make the trade knowing they could re-sign the player? this is a real longshot.

this is not a business move. it is calculated revenge for the sake of revenge.

Hi Crockpot.

Perhaps it would be easier to find the good business moves TB has made over the years instead of focusing on the bad ones.

Drafting Evan Longoria. Trading Hendrickson and a sack of rice for prospects from the Dodgers. Trading Lugo for prospects from the Dodgers. Fielding a cheap, good, young team on the field.

The new TB front office is very, very smart.
