[ QUOTE ]
end of week 2.

at the close on monday 19th march, when this began:

S&P500: 1403.20
Nasdaq:2394.41
Dow Jones: 12226.17

% change since then:
S&P500: 1420.86 = 1.01%
Nasdaq: 12354.35 = 1.01%
Dow Jones: 2421.64 = 1.01%

The portfolio has currently gained 1.75%, which is good news. 18 risers and 6 fallers

Top risers thus far:
RSC.V: 14.19%
AUN.V: 10.00%
VLO: 6.07%

Top fallers thus far:
POPEZ: 10.26%
AMSC: 4.06%
SPAN: 1.67%

Well done to missmisery for recommending the top 2 risers, very good picks. If anyone is interested, missmisery has a blog I now read to help learn about the exploration mining industy, http://resource-stocks.blogspot.com/. good stock tips so far.

If anyone thinks we should buy something now or sell any of the currently portfolio, please say.

This is likely not a useful comparison. It is not risk-adjusted and therefore you don't know whether your excess return over the market is related to taking on higher levels of risk than the index or if it can be attributed to good stock-picking.

If you want to see how it is performing compared to expectations then find the beta of the portfolio and run it through the CAPM (arguments for/against the accuracy of the CAPM not withstanding).

kimchi, thanks a lot, that was a very interesting post and seems like a good idea to implement. ill try and get it done when i have some decent free time as it would take a while i guess (got finals, boo!).

crushing felt, how would i find the beta of the portfolio? would i take an average of the beta's of my stocks? i guess not given diversification and hedging may make 2 risky stocks far less risky. not that i have done here, just the principle.

anyways, end of week 3, close on tuesday 10th april:

S&P500: 1403.20
Nasdaq:2394.41
Dow Jones: 12226.17

% change since then:
S&P500: 1448.4 = 3.22%
Nasdaq: 2477.6 = 3.47%
Dow Jones: 12573.9 = 2.84%

The porfolio is up 4.27%. 20 gainers, 4 fallers.

4 fallers:
popez: -13.91%
bbw: -2.35%
span: -1.11%
nxg: -.057%

top 5 gainers:
rsc: 27.68%
aun: 12%
vlo: 10.69%
ubb: 9.65%
cx: 8.34%

still 6 more spots if anyone has any recommendations.

You can play poker anywhere. Why stay in one of the most expensive places to live in the world?

Lower cost of living means more money to invest.

kane, the portfolio beta would be the weighted average of each individual equities beta.

Why not add to your winning positions and sell your losers? It looks like the money in Popez would be better used elsewhere.

It is a good idea to buy companies you feel will do strongly on dips. For example buying HAL on dips, or buying VLO around earnings report as many willl likely sell pre-report.

ill work out the portfolio beta. really should be doing an essay ive put off for around 15 waking hours now in last two day, but this is more interesting.

this is the list of betas, if i put a - it means it is not noted on yahoo finance.

3.5, aun.v, 4.26, 0.39, bxv.to, 2, 2.1, 3.34, 0.44, gld, 1.66, 3.43, 2.22, 2.55, 2.72, 0.7, pzd, rsc.v, slv, 2.05, 0.53, 2.46, 0.17, 1.23.

portfolio beta is 1.99. not including 6 companies, two of which are tracker for gold and silver and another 3 are exploration mining companies, so i guess its over 2.

S&P500: 1403.20
Nasdaq:2394.41
Dow Jones: 12226.17

% change since then:
S&P500: 1469.2 = 4.70%
Nasdaq: 2512.4 = 4.93%
Dow Jones: 12756.6 = 4.34%

this portfolio is up 6.93%, 22 risers, 2 fallers.

top risers:
aun.v 24%
rsc.v 19.38%
span 17.43% (all today, hurray for good news)

the 2 fallers:
popez 10.38%
bbw 4.78%

Energy sector has experienced some profit taking which makes it a good time to add to positions you feel have good fundamentals and at current price are undervalued. Just an opinion.

Are there any energy companies you would recommend? I initially said this should up to a 30 company portfolio so we can allow as much input and good suggestions from the forum community as possible while still keeping it at a realistic size, so if you have any suggestions please put them down.

one thing i would like to do to group off 24 companies into sectors. my feeling now is that it is definitely unbalanced. however, part of this is that i wanted to see if we could beat the market by simply compiling everybody's tips and sitting back and watching, with the occasional change when people thought it necessary.

done 315 words of my 1500 word essay on "‘Small firms are each so small, why should we be interested in the part they play in the economy?’".

To think, in 30 days ill of finished my final university exam. hu [censored] ray!
