Yea, but I've learned not to count on them unless they have at least an 8 run lead going into the 9th inning.

Anything less, and you see what happens. You would think a 7 run lead would be enough. Unfortunately, not against the Red Sox, and certainly not as early as in the 4th inning.

His numbers in the minors were pretty unimpressive.

Right.

By the way, people seem to be disappointed in Edwar. If you take out his one appearance after the two-week layoff, he has 26K and 4 BB in 16 1-3 innings.

Don't forget about the 4 HRs he's given up in that span. I recognize his K/BB is sick but he's also a flyball pitcher.

So is a decent pitcher named Johan Santana. Perhaps you've heard of him.

Obviously no one keeps up the kind of numbers Edwar has right now, but is there anyone to compare him to in terms of ridiculous K and BB rates, but also tons of HR? Can he be successful long term without drastically reducing the HR rate?

Yeah, I've heard a bit about Santana - thing is, Santana's not a reliever. If Edwar continues giving up home runs, he will have to be like Joba Chamberlain - a pitcher only brought in at the beginning of innings. You couldn't put him in for a jam because of his HR rate. This decreases his value.

I see in the minors he only gave up 1 HR this season, so it looks like variance. People keep comparing him to Doug Jones and it's possible he has a similar career (fwiw Jones had one year near the end with a sick K/BB and huge HR rate).
