Ha ha, good point.

OK, it is impossible to hit the ball on the clubface and impart topspin.

I was reading in a golf magazine to generate lots of speed on the downswing and then after impact slow to allow the grooves to do their work.

That sounds like aweful advice to me. Suggesting you try to decel after impact, that could get ugly.

Agreed. Besides, after impact it doesn't matter what you try to do. Just so long as you make solid contact the grooves will do their work.

I wasn't able to do it until I was less than a 5 handicap. Now I can't stop the damn thing from spinning.

A lot of it has to do with equipment. Ball wise, ProV1, Callway HX Tour, or Nike One Platinum are what you are looking for. Wedge wise, Cleveland "zip" groove, Titleist Spin Milled, etc.

It's easiest on full wedge shots. You just have to make solid contact, hold off your wrist break until the last second, and really compress the ball into the ground.

this is so wrong. i am an atrocious chipper and have resorted to putting from all sorts of retarded spots off the green (and have become quite proficient at it) and one of the results of one of the types of shots i play has top spin.

Nope, even with a putter the ball comes off the face with backspin. Eventually the ball rolls with top spin but never initially.

On a related note, I haven't really played regularly for about 5 years now and I'm trying to find a ball to play nowadays. I very much prefer a softer ball along the lines of what I played in high school (Maxfli Revolution). I see some have suggested Nike Platinum One and ProV1's, but I've tried them and didn't exactly fall in love. Any other suggestions?
