theres no reason to give up a bunch of players to get santana for one extra year...this has been talked about to death

[/ QUOTE ]

The reason I believe this is important is if the Yankees don't trade for him, another team may. Santana, I believe, has a NTC and will probably force the team to sign him to an extension. If that happens, then no, the Yankees can't sign him next year.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's hard to believe the Twins won't trade Santana even if it's just a trade deadline deal.

If Santana is traded before the 2008 season, then it will definitely come with a 4-7 year extension. If it happens mid-season, it's not as clear.

I'm sure the Twins would want the team to sign Santana to the extension. That would help them get a better deal.

[/ QUOTE ]

why would santana agree to this? he gets much better money in the offseason as a FA.

Exactamundo. Sometimes you've got to pay a premium to get players of Santana's caliber. In this case, the premium would be the value of the players given up in a deal less the extra value Santana adds in 2008.

...because that leaves the option of starting Joba. with Mo.

Santana is the biggest need, with another power reliever (maybe Joba?) a close second.

2008 Rotation-Santana, Hughes, Kennedy, Mussina. Obviously Pettite slides in if he re-ups...Obviously Joba is an option, although he might be more valuable in the short term in the bullpen.

[/ QUOTE ]

Isn't Joba Chamberlain a lock for next year's starting rotation? I thought Hank Steinbrenner has publicly stated this.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, he is.

[/ QUOTE ]

Papelbon was a lock to be in the Red Sox rotation at this time last year. Joba is going to go where he gives the Yankees the most value for 2008, and if that's the bullpen, he'll be in the bullpen. If you think about it from an EV perspective, he might give more value in the pen anyways.

sign nathan to setup for mariano in his final season, and become the closer after that

[/ QUOTE ]

wow.

[/ QUOTE ]
?

[/ QUOTE ]

Things that are wrong with this statement:

1) Mo is not signing a one-year deal.

2) Nathan is not taking a job as a setup man after being the best closer in baseball over the last four years.

Beyond that, others can expand if they like.

[/ QUOTE ]

Mo will probably sign a 2 year deal... in my original post i implied signing nathan for 2009 season and have him be setup guy for mo's final season... if he gets paid big i don't see why he wouldn't agree to this

My brother wants him in the pen because "if he starts we don't get to watch him every night."

I agree with the above but both Cashman and the idiots who own the team have said that he's going to be a starter. For now, I believe them.

theres no reason to give up a bunch of players to get santana for one extra year...this has been talked about to death

they're gonna be a top 5 team next year and could easily bethe best team in 2009...

2009... sign a shortstop N move jeter to third
(furcal maybe?... i don't follow NL but i'm pretty sure he's bueno)

sign nathan to setup for mariano in his final season, and become the closer after that

sign santana

sign peavy or sheets

in between then don't trade any of your young players

I don't see why they can't easily do all of these things

[/ QUOTE ]
Question. If Jeter wouldn't move to third for the best player in baseball, why would he move to third for Rafael Furcal???

Lol @ people saying it's the end of the world for the Yankees.

If the Yankees keep Posada and Mo and sign Bonds they will be favorites in the East.
