Give me 1 good reason why women shouldn\'t play b-ball on a lower rim
Women don't play from the same tees in golf for good reason. The level of play would fall greatly, and without a doubt, even less people would watch the LPGA than they do now if the players were hacking around from the tips.
It always made zero sense to me as to why women play the same height hoop as the men in basketball. So I ask you...besides the obv hassle of having different height baskets in gyms across the world, give me one good reason why women SHOULD play the same height hoop? Hell, I might even stop by ESPN 2 every once in awhile to see some chick throw down a sick facial. |

What improvements would there be if they played on a shorter rim?

Re: Give me 1 good reason why women shouldn\'t play b-ball on a lower rim
Pretty much just more exciting gameplay.
Dunks/alley oops, probably more hard fouls/contact in the paint. I'm not saying this would for sure save the WNBA and make them a huge sport all of a sudden, but it certainly would make the product much, much more watchable. |

[/ QUOTE ] I know nothing about the WNBA, so take this with a grain of salt. Went to the Sparks home opener as a guest of one of the owners (haha I can't even remember the name of their opponent, something weird, like the Minnesota Lemurs or something) - anyway it ended up being a great game. DeezNuts bet on the under and the teams blew the line by like 30 points, to give you an indication. The game was highly watchable - they're well coached, great fundamentals, etc. Outside of a couple more alley-oop attempts, and finishes that are dunks instead of lay ins... it's not like lowering the rim would increase their athleticism and make it seem more similar to the men's game. They'll still be slower, less explosive, not jump as high, etc. It's just a different product from the NBA - not one I would really seek out on a regular basis - but I don't think any amount of tinkering with court size / basket height helps much. -Al |

[/ QUOTE ] Haha - yeah, gay dudes [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] the WNBA apparently - a surprising number in attendance (ok, it's true, I'm just assuming that guys with dyed hair wearing Lisa Leslie jerseys and lots of jewelry are gay). But mainly it was families with their kids, and lesbians in attendance. Staples capacity is like 20,000, and I would say there were about 8,000 or so in attendance. At first I was thinking "this is kind of sad" but the crowd was really into it, great fans. -Al |

Re: Give me 1 good reason why women shouldn\'t play b-ball on a lower r
Because dunking isn't a necessary part of the game for it to be competitive. The ball is smaller for women (which I don't even think is that necessary). There are also some rules differences in the pro leagues, but we'll keep it recreational level.
Other sports differences. Golf - shorter hole length Volleyball - lower net Hockey - no checking (I think) Soccer - none Tennis - fewer sets |
