its all about how dedicated of a student you are. if you're willing to put in the time to learn the material you'll get the grades.

side note, i found high school success did not correlate very well to college success.

In my experience, college grades, especially early on, were more about discipline and adjusting to newfound freedom than anything else.

As far as the calc, that seems like a good question for your academic adviser. But to me, it seems silly to take a class like that just to give yourself a lighter load. Save those opportunities for your junior/senior years, when you'll really appreciate them.
