Joe is a GREAT announcer, one of the very best currently working in baseball. He's the baseball version of John Madden or Bill Walton - totally retarded, inconsistent and illogical, but fun to listen to, passionate about the game, and full of little weird stories and "wisdom from experience". If you want correct statistical analysis go to some web site. I'd rather listen to Joe.

passionate about the game ,

I don't sense this at all. More like grumpy old man "back in myyyy day...we didn't have fancy stats like Home Runs and RBI's. We didn't keep track of Wins and Losses. We played the game because we played the game - and we did it the right way. None of this, 3-run homer stuff. We didn't even get paid to play back then. We paid to play. It was like College, where I hear people who aren't me pay to learn."

It's actually infuriating that Joe Morgan hates on the stats that made him one of the best second basemen to play the game.

[/ QUOTE ]

Bill James says Morgan is the best 2b of all time and that it's not close.

[/ QUOTE ]

kyle's original statement is actually sort of infuriating. I get what he's saying, it just sounds awful and wrong when written that way.. probably because it is wrong. That stats don't make Joe awesome, Joe being awesome at baseball makes Joe awesome.. the stats are just evidence after the fact.

[/ QUOTE ]

He meant that Joe is the greatest 2B ever only when viewed through the lens of the stats he is criticizing. From a lot of other (inferior, stupid) perspectives, Morgan is in the top tier but probably not the best. Like, say, from Morgan's perspective.

The existence of FJM is justified simply if all they did was point out every single time Joe Morgan answered a question by saying he did't know the answer.

LOL

joe morgan summarized in one chat question, and answer(?)

[ QUOTE ]
rOb (rs nation): Hey Joe, What'd you think of Schilling's return to the mound last night?

Joe Morgan: The Red Sox are a good team.

They've been able to play well even with him out.

Their starting pitching is the key.

The Yankees have the best lineup, but not the best pitching.

[/ QUOTE ]

well not totally summarized as it didn't include his famous word 'consistent'.
