Default Yanks offer job to Girardi

Being reported on ESPN.com 3 years 6 million. I say good hire if he takes it, and last year the rumor was that he has always wanted it.

So, do you think Mattingly stays on as bench or hitting coach?

At first I was happy with Mattingly, but there is no doubt in my mind now that Girardi is the guy to hire. If you are going to center your team on young pitching, he is a good choice.

I would be surprised if Mattingly stays, but that is just an opinion, no real evidence to back it up. Just the fact that he put himself out there saying he wanted the job, and probably expected the job.

By making the offer to Girardi it seems to me the Yankees are pretty much accepting the strong possibility that Mattingly leaves the organization in unhappy terms.

level?

Absolutely no way he stays on with the yankees. If Torre gets a job elsewhere he could go be a bench coach there.

No, not a level, just asking opinions. I think it's extremely unlikely he stays, but I think the fact his entire professional career is with them makes it at least > 0%.

Really? I figured Mattingly was a Yankee employee for life.

He's already said he is leaving.

I think like Dynasty. I thought there could be the teammate angle but Girardi missed being a teammate of Mattingly by one season. But maybe part of the discussion/job offer is that Mattingly stays on the coaching staff (like the Cowboys hiring/retaining 2 asst coaches before hiring a head coach) as long as Mattingly wants to stay on, but like someone else said depending on how he feels about being passed over he may cut ties himself.

But I was thinking like Dynasty that Mattingly is a Yankee for as long as he wants to be one.

That was the main thing that he had going for him in getting the Managing position. One of the biggest things he had going for him was the Yankees weren't going to want to piss him off and step over him when he obviously wanted the job, because he is maybe the most popular Yankee alive.

I think when the Yankees made the decision to go with Girardi, they did it with full expectation of disenfranchising Mattingly and him leaving.

I think that in a Baseball sense Girardi was most likely an easy choice, what must have made it difficult was the popularity of Mattingly, and knowing a "yankee for life" would be very upset if he didn't get the job he'd been "groomed" for.

Its also a sign that Cashman has a lot of control imo.
