Is it legal to poker online in china?
are there work arounds?

It's not legal to poker online in china. However, china has many laws which are never enforced, and this is one of them. So you can play pretty much all poker sites except partypoker.

When I was in the mainland two years back, I pokered and casino whored with relatively few problems from Tianjin. I had an ASDL connection and mostly played Pokerstars. Never ran into any issues, although, sometimes certain sites wouldn't load due to the Great Firewall.

Playtech has been gaining alot of new Chinese players, I think it really depends where in China you are.

you may get in more trouble getting caught rumaging through dumpsters for food than online poker.

If you can't get around the firewall there, which probably will block some sites, just set up an SSH proxy and tunnel out - my friend in China does this for non-poker stuff that is blocked. You'll have to find one not located in the US though, lol.
