The number 8 represents wealth and prosperity. You'll see a lot of license plates with ..888... I was told that the wealthy Chinese pay a lot of money for those plates. The more 'eights' the better too.

Chinese is full of puns on homophones, words that have the same or similar pronunciation, because their sound system has only about 100 distinct syllables (if you don't include tone). 8 is considered lucky because it is pronounced 'ba' which sounds like 'fa' (prosperity). Thus, 888 is the Chinese numerological equivalent to the Western 777. Furthermore, the number 4 is considered unlucky in Chinese because it is pronounced 'si' which sounds like 'si' (to die). Thus 4 is the Chinese equivalent to the Western 13. In fact, in many Chinese buildings you will not find a floor 4. However, the unluckiest number in Chinese is not 444 as you might expect. It is 514. This is because it is pronounced "wu yao si" which sounds like "wo yao si" (I will/want to die.) This might well the Chinese equivalent to the Western 666.
