It depends on their popularity.

I know from very close 2nd hand knowledge that Paul Wasika gets paid 250k/year + tournament entries.

Pretty sweet [censored] deal I think.

that's a pretty nice deal.

surf,

This seems unlikely. Could your source have overstated or gotten this wrong?

If true, Paul would be pulling in far more than one of their first tier marquee names.

Several of the marquee "first tier" names have an actual vested interest in the company, and $250k a year is a drop in the bucket to them.

I'm pretty sure this is what I was told, the only way I might have this mixed up is if he has a multi-year deal for 250k plus tourney entries...that could be a possibility.

If investigative work needs to be done I can contact the source to verify their knowledge.

Admo, you do realize that Wasika finished 2nd in the highest rated poker telecast in the history of television, that's gotta count for something since joe schmo who doesn't know poker probably looks at a full-tilt ad and knows only 2 or 3 pros, rather Wasicka does have a lot mainstream credibility.

I have it from a very very reliable source that Layne had a really low five figure payment deposited to his FTP account every month, from there he could either cash out or chose to play.

I’m not sure about this hourly wage but I have never heard of this and am sure this wasn’t Layne’s deal.

The deal you quoted is about an $800K/year deal, given the rising cost of playing the circuit. That's a substantial amount more than at least one of their top tier players.

However, he's not that marketable of a guy because of his bland table demeanor. Despite his WSOP ME and NBC HU success, Wasika's Q score is lower than...well, just about everybody else in poker.

ps. this is no knock on Paul. He's a solid player, and I have great respect for guys that forgo all the made-for-tv-tirade BS.

I think his showing at the WSOP counts for a lot less than you might think.

I agree with admo, i think this is probably a case of telephone gone bad.

I also think if he was freerolling as you suggest for every tournament, he would enter a lot more. As is, he doesn't play all that many compared to some guys.

Also, I can't imagine why they would choose to pay that much. Sure they have to compensate these guys and make it worth their while, but its not like there's a huge market driving the prices up for all but maybe a handful of players.
