What part of the power cord? At the base near the monitor, or at the end by the plug?

Does the power cord come out of dell monitors? I thought they did. If you switch power cables, does that help?

I am sitting in front of a Dell 2001FP, which is what I think the OP is talking about and it does indeed have a detachable power supply in two parts. There is an AC cord (not a standard PC type. It has round holes on the device end and round prongs on the brick) that attaches to a power supply "brick" with a permanently attached low-voltage cord that plugs into the monitor. OP should probably order a replacement for the bad piece (or just the whole unit if they don't sell the two pieces separately from Dell. If the part inside the monitor where the cord attaches is damaged, he may be SOL.

The "popping and fizzing" that OP is describing, makes me think that it may be the AC cord that is damaged. If so, he should replace it before he electrocutes himself or starts a fire.

it's also possible that the connection between the power connector in the monitor and the board on which it is likely soldered is coming loose.
