Re: Where can I play NL in the MN/WI area?
If you are in the Mpls area, your best bet is St. Croix Casino in Turtle Lake, WI. Once it gets past 2:00pm, they almost always have at least two 1/2 NL games running. Very rarely they'll get a bigger game going. Last I was there, it was $50 min / $200 max, with a 10% rake, capped at $4.
The games never got super deep in my experience...a few times 4 or 5 players would have over $500. They use a yellow $2 chip which can make for looser play vs. the red-chip game how I most often see it spread where I am now. I played there 14 times and didn't have a losing trip...the games are really good. Even though I'm in Vegas now, I'll always have a soft spot for Turtle Lake. As far as I know, Canterbury doesn't spread NL because MN has a law prohibiting any wagers over $60. I don't know if this has changed, but it was true at one time at least. |

In Wisconsin, they have a 2/5 NL game at Oneida in Green Bay, $100 min/$500 max.
They spread a 3/5 NL game at Potawatomi in Milwaukee, $200 min/$600 max. |

[/ QUOTE ] All this is spot on. But, DDT, I'm sorry to inform you that over the past 4-5 months a regular 2-5 NL game has been breaking out. Some Thursdays after the weekly tournament, but most Fridays and Saturdays (sometimes as early as the mid-afternoon following the noon tourney). Lately, the Friday night 2/5 game has been juiced, action-packed - it goes all night as 1/2ers make runs at the big game. On the other hand, some of the 1/2 games, have been getting very deep. The other night there was more than $7k in one of the main games. OP, play solid poker to win but expect to get snapped by outrageous hands. A bunch of calling stations that can't do the math, heck don't know the math. Slot machine poker if you will. If you're a decent player, there is a very good chance that you will come home a winner. Good Luck! |

I heard about St. Croix casino and the 1/2NL game. Is it really that good of a game? [/ QUOTE ] It's the Cheers of poker rooms. You have to walk through the casino before going upstairs to play, rarely have I made it up the stairs without someone saying "Hi" from up top or see them writing my name on the board as I walk into the casino. The games are good and very beatable. The wait is never bad. Once you're on the table you can out play most of the room. The best players stay out of one another's way once you earn the respect and they continue to chop up the fish. In the big games, the best players really go after one another. It is very easy to identify the good players in the room by their play (of course, chip stacks help). It's a badge of honor and understood that we're there to play tough and beat other solid players Other positives: there are not too many sunglass wearing morons in the room but, a few too many poker tattoos. Easy to set up and trap the fish. Plus, they continue to give plenty of action even after you show down the nuts constantly. Kinda sad. But, I quickly get over it. I've been considering moving back to WI, and this is another point in favor of doing so. I used to go for 3 to 5 days when I could get time off work. I slept in my van in the parking lot, or at the RV campground in the park nearby for $10 a night. I would often play 24 hours straight opening a game in the morning with the local businessmen and playing straight through until they came back the next morning. Good times. |
