The only reason I think Safari's joke was a little out of line is because I don't think that's the right type of joke to make about someone unless you're pretty good friends with him, which I don't think was the case here.

Phil berated Mike's play even though he didn't know him. He's a self-inflated blowhard. Glad to see him lose.

It seems that half the posters do not even get why Safai's comment was clever and hilarious...

I also agree that Laak can be a bit annoying, but he is a necessary evil in order to keep the other players talkative imo.

Also, people complaining about any players (Laak, Brunson, etc) for being too nitty are extremely annoying to me. The point is to watch players engage different styles, why would you want everyone to be overly aggro. There needs to be a nit to snap them off every once in a while.

Mike Matusow is looking great. Love to see him win (since yeah it is rare but he shows he talent from time to time).

Again, I know he's an incredible player, but his NL cash game seems a bit weak.

Whether you found it funny or not, Safai's joke was in good fun. Hellmuth berates, belittles and insults perfect strangers every day at the poker table.

If Laak occasionally said ANYTHING funny he wouldn't be quite as annoying. But he never does.

He just rambles, rambles, rambles.

kaplan: "phil laak loves it when other people gamble"

[/ QUOTE ]

Now that some of Gabe Kaplan's quips from this episode are starting to be recognized in the thread, I'm mildly surprised no one has given any love to this one (so I will):

After Hellmuth's ludicrously boastful tirade about how much "power" he has in poker, Gabe remarked, "Phil Hellmuth is bigger than U.S. Steel."

Hyman Roth would be proud, Phil.

I personally enjoy Gabe and AJ going back and forth, but it would be great to see HSP on DVD with the option to only listen to the table talk.

BTW:

Gabe: In case you missed that, Bob Safari just said that Phil "relaxed himself" by looking at a picture of himself under a shower.
AJ: Must have been a laminated picture. Could have been his driver's liscense.

Priceless

-some poor play

-the table talk/manner of many of the players is awful. really low class. incessant mid-hand chatter is inexcusable imo. also too much 'trying to be my entertaining poker persona cause im on tv!' going on.

-gabe kaplan often sounds foolish with his understanding of both the game in general and the players thought process. add in the fact that it is added in post-production and it is unbearable. akin to john madden recording in post and going "you know, the defense is probably going to blitz here, so brady should be on the lookout and go deep... but he better be wary of the jets fast cornerbacks....", blitz comes, brady is picked off.

this is obv the best poker tv show, but many aspects of it deserve to be spit on.

Isn't the commentary done in real time, e.g. Negreanu jumping in the booth?
