Question about Magic Johnson and the 1980 Finals
Magic Johnson's 1980 Finals is legendary is considered by some to be the greatest playoff performance ever. (See http://www.nba.com/history/finals/gr...formances.html )
But I've heard differing accounts of the last game in that finals. Kareem was out due to an ankle injury so Magic "started at center." I've also heard that he played all 5 positions that game. But I've also heard that he didn't *really* play center that game. He did the opening tip and posted up a couple of times, but mainly played his usual PG position. I've never seen the game. So which is true? And if he did play all 5 positions, does that mean offensively or defensively? (E.g., there were times in this years WCF where Shawn Marion would guard the PG on one possession, then guard Duncan on another possession. Did Magic do that? |

Re: Question about Magic Johnson and the 1980 Finals
I saw the game, but have only the vaguest of recollections. My memory is that Magic handled the ball plenty, just like he usually did, but he also posted up a lot more than usual. I have no memory of what he did defensively.

Re: Question about Magic Johnson and the 1980 Finals
I thought Kareem was out due to migrane headache. I didn't see the game, ex-Laker Michael Thompson who is on the Loose Cannons radio show stated that people think Magic played center, but he just jumped center, and didn't play center. The topic came up after Lebron's game and Magic's was the unanimous number one post season game of all-time, and I think Vick the Brick said he played center, and Thompson said no, and nobody rebutted.

my understanding was that he played PG offensively and played Center defensively, but I've never seen the whole game.

An even more legendary feat was Magic banging 23 groupies simultaneously after the game.

Re: Question about Magic Johnson and the 1980 Finals
42 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists on the road, in BOSTON GARDEN, against Bird, McHale, & Parish while a key player and one of the greatest centers in NBA history is out ill.
Does it matter what position he played? |

Re: Question about Magic Johnson and the 1980 Finals
Was this game the same one where Magic finished by executing a finger-roll (or was it a baby hook) from the center position?
I actually think that play came from a different game. But I could see people assuming it was from the same game, and that single image could account for the assumption that he was "playing center" more than he actually did. |
