Default 360 Dashboard update coming December 4th

list of features

Most important:

1. Support for new video codecs, including DivX!

2. Can now download/buy original XBox games from the marketplace for 1200 points. Halo, along with a handful of others will be the first available.

3. Enchanced community functionality / social networking. You can now write a little bio about yourself; restricting it to just friends or letting anybody see it. If enabled, you can also browse the friends lists of your friends.

4. XBox Live Arcade hits. This is basically analagous to platinum hits. Older very popular arcade titles will become available for a discounted price. Lumines will be one of the first offered, at 800 points.

5. Inside XBox - basically a constantly updated stream of new game news/info.

Haha, Psychonauts is one of them - I wonder if the Xbox Live people watch Zero Punctuation.

DivX is nice, but I wonder if it will work with XViD, which is what most of the movies I download are encoded in.

Did some Googling and found this:

15. What types of AVI files are supported?

The Xbox 360 supports files encoded using MPEG-4 Part 2, Simple and Advanced Simple Profile. These files are often referred to as Xvid or DivX® video files.

[/ QUOTE ]

If XViD works then I guess I won't really need my original Xbox anymore, since all I use it for anymore is watching stuff on my HDTV using XBMC.

So would it be possible to play Halo 1 on xbox live? Multi-player in that game was the best and the only thing ever missing from it was xbox live.

I'm 99% sure that you won't be able to. They aren't going to change the code at all and making an online multiplayer takes a lot of dev time.

If anyone cares 1up did a video preview of the new update. The interface looks way better, and seems to be cleaned up. Also some interesting changes just to make things easier.

Here's hoping they support h264 for their next update.

Seriously, DivX support means my Xbox 360 becomes a XXXboxxx 369.

Do they not already? I haven't tried h264 before but while reading the link in the OP it said something about "improving h264 playback", which implies support is already there.
