It essentially shows how you get income. If you win 10k in a casino the gov't doesn't have a clue as to what you started with. So, Drug Dealer walks into the casino with 10k in drug money, plays a few hours, cashes out for 9k, the gov't. can no longer come after that 9k in a drug related case (unless they have surveillance video of you continuously "washing" chips, then they will charge you with money laundering along with drug dealing).
