in one of the most offensive slurs i've read in a mainstream Western newspaper in a long-time, The Age in Melbourne has described the peaceful uprising as "intifada-like"

It astounds me that a newspaper is willing to cast such an abhorrent slur against the Burmese democracy activists.

As someone who grew up in Myanmar, I'm really glad that this is getting worldwide publicity. When the government massacred thousands in 1988, none of the international authorities did anything but stood by and watched. Let's hope that does not happen again.

Could you explain this to me? Some quick google tells me that "intifada" = rebellion, am I missing the slur part of that?

It's normally used in the context of the Palestinian uprisings.

the protests were triggered when the government stopped subsidizing gasoline causing the prices to skyrocket.

Why would monks give a [censored] about the price of gasoline?
