Default Simple pre-flop question

Hero: $53
Villain: $52 (15.4/15.4/?)

.10/.25 blinds

You have 88 on the button, everyone folds to you. You raise it to $1. Villain on the SB makes it $4. Do you let go right there?

Hmm folding kinda makes you too easy to 3 bet off of button steals. If your opening a (presumably) large range on the button but are folding to 3 bets with hands as strong as 88 it seems your going to end up getting 3 bet quite a lot.

Plus if villain has a pretty tight range here I dont think calling for set value is too awful

in situations like this i like to raise on occasion to narrow my range.

this is just one of those hands that are tricky to play in that situation...

i couldnt say that there is one great way to play them

tag... i would fold.. or smooth call
lag.... raise pre and flop

tight passive.. call...

i'd fold 88 here unless someone has developed a pattern of 3 betting me or stacks are a little deeper. if someone is doing it a lot, i might 4bet them with whatever, but i still dong like calling with a hand like 88 with 100b stacks. i'd rather do it with something that hits more flops, and makes more use of my position.

Are you guys leveling? How's this not an instacall given stacks, position & range of villain, for set value alone?

if he has a tight 3bet range then you have enough implied odds to set mine. if he is looser I would still call and play back on a lot of flops.

folding here is super weak.
