You're probably better off just using iTunes and exiting out of it when you aren't syncing up stuff with the Touch. You'd hate to have Apple change something on the Touch to lock it down more with iTunes and have to import your stuff into iTunes.

yah, that 3% of my cpu usage is a huge resource hog. damn you itunes!!!!!!!

Yeah, you can use 3rd party software. I have used Media Monkey to xfer songs.

edited to add: *caveat* I guess there have been some reports of errors when using MM though

Just do a google search. It is free though apparently some features (converting to mp3s) do have a limited time use unless you purchase the full version.
