We were both dissappointed and shocked that everybody loved it so much. I felt like it was pretty good, but definately not as great as I was led to believe. I kind of felt like the whole time was spent building up and it never really climaxed or concluded.

Thanks Zeej, I'm going tomorrow...confirm this would be a great date movie, or no?

[/ QUOTE ]

Absolutely. She will prolly fall in love with the main character which can work out well for you.

Exactly because I am a guitar-strummin boho romeo.

Review to come...

Most of what everyone's said I agree with, but

SPOILERS NOW MAYBE

Was everyone satisfied with the ending? I felt a little let down by the lack of info about his life in the UK, though I do like that they didnt really get together.

I liked it a lot. That chapter of his life was over, and a new one was about to start. I think things wrapped up nicely and realistically.

I was searching for what she said to him on the hill in that one part - and stumbled across this. I REALLY enjoyed this film as well and am getting the soundtrack asap.

simple story, amazing songs, powerful movie.

loved this movie and i didn't even like the music very much. obviously it worked very well as an emotive vehicle for the film so i can't say i hated it or anything, but it was a bit pedestrian/coldplay/typical singer songwriter fodder for me and i would never dream of listening to the soundtrack. in spite of this i was still very moved and am very grateful for the experience. (i know this is a bit of an old bump but this thread was the reason i sought the movie out and it just came out in AU)

Modern Musicals:

Moulin Rouge
Chicago
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut (the last movie musical on the 20th century)

By modern, I did not mean recent. I meant "not old school".

I clarified that by saying:

There is no spontaneous bursting into songs like you would expect in a musical. Instead, the music is actually part of the plot line.

Then the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the best recent example I can think of (every song actually advanced the plot).
