Default Frets on Fire: Free Guitar Hero clone for the PC

Frets on Fire is an awesome (and free) Guitar Hero clone for the PC.

You might feel like an idiot at first when you're holding your keyboard like a guitar, but you soon forget about it as you start rocking out to your favourite tune!

The game only comes with three free tracks; so you'll need to download other songs separately. All of the Guitar Hero songs and many others are available from your favourite torrent sites (uTorrent is a great client if you don't already have one) or from some Google searching.

There are lots of mods available that alter FoF's appearance and gameplay. The most popular is RF Mod which adds two player, fixes some bugs, and makes the game look and feel a lot more like Guitar Hero. A guy from the Frets on Fire forums kindly put together a mod starter pack that includes RF Mod and a few other gems to get noobs started quickly.

On my keyboard I had to change the 'pick' key to Enter (the small one by the numpad) rather than Return, as not all chord combinations were working. You can test the different chord combinations in the keyboard setup screen to find the 'fret' and 'pick' keys that work on your keyboard.

Enjoy!

I haven't tried it out yet but it's worth noting that the Guitar Hero controller works with this if you have a Pplaystation2/USB adaptor, except for the whammy bar.

Fair enough - but did you try it with RF Mod? Or with a Guitar Hero controller?

Also it's worth remembering that FoF is still early in development which is why it's missing the polish of Guitar Hero. But considering its price (free), the huge library of tunes (already considerably more than all the Guitar Hero games combined), and the fact that you can modify it to your liking - I think it's off to a pretty good start.

Each to their own though

I've played Guitar Hero 2 once and it was great, but I don't own a PS2, so Frets on Fire is pretty sweet to me! The one big advantage FoF has is you can create your own note-charts for songs. You don't have to wait for the next GH to have the song you want, you can either make it yourself or find it on the net.

I never played FoF back when this post was first made so it might be different now. It's constantly updated.

The thing with the homemade songs for FoF is that alot of them suck and is out of sync. It's hard to find the diamonds~

True... I delete close to 75% of the ones I download because of that reason.

This is pretty much spot on. I have the 360 version, and occasionally use FoF to play a few of the songs from GH1 that I can't get on the Xbox.
