El D,

He should have said "would you like change?" and then stand there and when you said "yes" he should have asked how much.

Noah, NT:

See, here's the deal.

If the check is $35.55 and I leave $100, I want 65.45 in change.

However, when it's $189.55 and I leave 3 $100 bills, then I've signaled to the guy that I am leaving him a tip of > $10.45, right? That makes me think maybe he shouldn't worry about bothering with the 45 cents in coins. I'm on the fence on this one.

If you got change for a dollar in your pocket right now
Then it's time to exit the club

If you've been sippin out the same cup since you got here and now you swallowin ice
Then it's time to exit the club

If you made one toss and all the money you had disappeared, then please step to the rear
Then it's time to step your game up

El Diablo

Seems like your question is more "Is it okay for him to bring back $110 instead of $110.45?" because he pretty clearly should bring back $110.45. Nobody is gonna complain if he brings exact change -- but some will bitch if he only brings back $110.

If I'm the server, I'm bringing back the exact change...good vibe or no, you never can tell what's going to trip someone's nit-switch.

Check comes and it's $189.55. You leave three hundred dollar bills.

Should he come back with $110 in change or $110.45?

[/ QUOTE ]

In situations like this, regardless of the size of the bill, I try to throw in some change to make it even. E.G. paying $300.55 here. This makes it easier for the server, and you also get rid of any spare change you have that you dont want. Of course its much more plausible on a smaller bill but w/e, if you have 55 cents add it on.

All,

This seems like an appropriate place to ask this question.

Good waiter, have had appropriate amount of conversation with him, fun, friendly vibe for everyone.

Check comes and it's $189.55. You leave three hundred dollar bills.

Should he come back with $110 in change or $110.45?

[/ QUOTE ]

I am a server and if this happen to me I would give you back $110.45. If I have no coins on me I would give you $111.

Water: Yeah, I mean, obv I always carry lots of coins around.

oT: Exactly. I still left him $40 because he was a very good waiter who helped make our dinner enjoyable, but a little part of me was like, wtf where's my 45 cents!
