Great calls are not that big a deal...in that spot in a tournament it was pretty sick I agree, but it isn't like Doyle put Antonius on A2...great calls are a dime a dozen cuz in cash games you see people making AWFUL calls 9/10 times and once K high is good and it's a 'great call'.

[ QUOTE ]
I for one think great calls, more than great bluffs, are an underrated part of world class poker (Stu Ungar's 10 high call being the best EVAR) [/ QUOTE ] Barry Greenstein's comments on Stu Ungar are interesting. Stuey was a relentless force. He played in and won more than twice as many hands as anyone else in any game in which he played. At the end of each session he was invariably either the big winner or he was broke. If he detected weakness in an opponent, he would take the pot away. He was a hard player to bluff, since he was an expert at figuring out when his opponent was on a draw that didn’t get there. There are stories about great calls Stuey made, but I haven’t heard any about great laydowns. |

[/ QUOTE ] Agreed. I also think that the call Doyle made in this instance was driven almost entirely by the high blinds/antes at this point in the tournament. It looked like "the guy" (sorry I can't remember his name) had made a number of all in moves over top of Doyle and he just had to make a stand. 33s at least had a good chance of being 50/50. Of course I'm far from being in a position to critique major tournament plays by professional players (let alone living legends), I just loved the line and the delivery. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I finally saw his solitaire line at the WPT event where the guy makes a comment about how he could call with his pocket threes. Awesome. [/ QUOTE ] "the guy" ?? [/ QUOTE ] Scandinavians all play the same. [/ QUOTE ] FYP |
