Default Go Somewhere Random for Thanksgiving

I have absolutely no plans for Thanksgiving but have a four day weekend. I was planning on taking a trip to Vegas, but I don't think I want to do that. I can go to AC for a lot cheaper.

So I decided that I might like to just go somewhere random. I'm in NYC and would like to fly to one city for 3 or 4 days.

Here are my constraints:
- Due to the short time period, it has to be no more than a 10 hour flight. Even that would be pushing it.
- I'm Canadian so I don't want to do any Canadian city since I can do it some other time and do it a lot better.
- The same applies to American cities although if someone felt really strongly about a West Coast American city I'd consider it.
- Mexico is out since I spent a bunch of time there recently.
- I'd like to do it as cheap as possible, but I'm willing to spend around a grand. Maybe even 1500 if I thought it was worth it.

Any ideas on how I can get cheap flights and what places I should consider? I use to hear about people that would just go to the airport and get cheap flights to someplace on a flight that wasn't full. Does that work? I kind of like the idea of just going to an airport and finding a random flight.

Any ideas on websites that might be helpful?

Really, any advice at all that you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe I should also post some places I'd be interested in:
- Rome, I was there for a couple of days as a teenager and loved the history. I could easily spend a couple of days there and love it.
- Paris, there's lots to see, and more importantly take the opportunity to visit some WWII sites that are on my list of places to see before I die.
- Scotland/Ireland. Seems like a fun place to go.

I like drinking places, but I also enjoy historical sites and things like that.

Australia

They're having a national election on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. What could be more fun than that?

Well, you did ask for random

I'd love to go to Australia, but the flight would probably kill me. Two 20+ hour flights when I only have 96 hours is a little too much.

I would choose somewhere in Europe: Paris or Lisbon sound good. Maybe San Sebastien in Basque country. BEST FOOD EVER. You would have to fly through Madrid I think. Might be a bit of travel for 3 days. The "showing up the airport to see what's available" just means flying stand-by. If you have such a short period of time, probably not worth not being able to get a flight somewhere.

Sounds awesome, wish I could do the same.
