Default Online Stock Trading

I'm thinking about buying some stock, specifically on the NYSE. Can someone recommend an online trader? I'm not sure how this works, but it'd be nice to be able to buy from different markets as well. Thanks.

not sure what the best option is out there either...would like to find this out too

i'm currently thinking of just using vanguard as my brokerage account to consolidate everything for convenience.

so far i've found a good program for just equity trades,

if you have 25k or more in deposit accounts, you can get 30 commission free trades a month from bank of america

not sure about if you want to trade options or margin accounts, etc.

And as a second choice I think Etrade looks good. I'm thinking of opening an account there 10$/trade, plus they give 4.15% on whatever balance you dont have invested.

the 4.15% is for CAN$, they must have a similar option for US as well.

I've heard a lot of bad things about Etrade customer service.

Might be worth researching before opening an account with them.

interactive brokers on the other hand is great. they allow you to do all kinds of important things and are full service. (important things relating to leveraging securities you can't via other brokers)

Interactivebrokers is a great/cheap site for online trading but for someone new to online trading I would not recommend this site. Lack of customer service and with this particular site setup... this site overall is for experienced investors.

A site that offers just as much if not more options with much better online trading learning tools and excellent customer service would be OptionsExpress.com. Individual trades are slightly more expensive.

I dont know, you wont have any research papers available to you at interactive brokers, but if you want to buy/sell stocks/options/futures for a min of 2-3$ a trade, and have somewhat of a clue of what you're doing, this is the site to go to.

Note that the $10 commission is if you are high volume, e.g. Power Etrade. Etrade is almost a full service outfit, with lots of services and connected organizations like a bank, etc. They also have a lot of ATM's.

Interactive Brokers has long been known as a cheap, powerful, fast, sometimes reliable brokerage with horrible customer service. Look on siliconinvestor.com for a thread on them. You'll find thousands of complaint posts.
