The Smiths- How soon is now:
"There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry
And you want to die"

Anything by The Smiths.

[/ QUOTE ]

Except, perhaps, for Some Girls are Bigger Than Others.

Reel Around The Fountain is very sad, although of course wry and clever as well. "Oh take me to the haven of your bed / was something that you never said"!

Asleep has got to be the saddest - here's the lyrics:

"Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I’m tired and i
I want to go to bed

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone
Don’t try to wake me in the morning
’cause I will be gone
Don’t feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I don’t want to wake up
On my own anymore

Sing to me
Sing to me
I don’t want to wake up
On my own anymore

Don’t feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go

There is another world
There is a better world
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well ...

Bye bye
Bye bye
Bye ..."

I read an interview where Noel Gallagher of Oasis said it was his favourite Smiths song but it was years before he realised it was about committing suicide!

Oh, then how about pretty much anything by the Tindersticks?

Not sure how sad this song is... the heroin seems to make him pretty happy actually.

Lux Aeterna by Clint Mansell. It's the theme from Requiem for a Dream. My friends and I dubbed it "epically depressing."
