Default anybody else have trouble filing taxes tonight?

A - I'm an idiot for waiting this long
B - it normally takes me about 20 minutes on Turbo Tax, but I made 1 mistake tonight, so I had to fumble around and do my return twice before I got it right

C - the net of the above is that I got my taxes down just about at midnight. probably 1 or 2 minutes late. when I try to efile, I get the following error message from turbotax:

questions are:

is the deadline EST?
what is the penalty for late filing/paying? odds I'm screwed? the turbotax site has the following message up that they are acknowledging the problem, and that as long as I transmitted data to them by midnight (EST?) I will be fine.

" Electronic Filing Delays and Status

Intuit is working with the IRS and has notified them that throughput on our electronic filing system was not what we expected, resulting in a system slowdown.

We encourage customers to continue trying to e-file as we continue to work on the issue.

Customers can rest assured that their returns will be accepted as timely filed and the protection of the taxpayer’s interest is our highest priority.

Check back for further details from Intuit and the IRS on Wednesday morning, April 18."

Taking advantage of Sunday the 15th and Patriot's Day the 16th is super-procrastination.

That's what I would expect. (EDT, of course)

They seem to be pretty lenient - there giving anyone delayed by the snow storm in the NE an extra 2 days.

Please tell me you owe, otherwise you deserve to be beaten with a rubber hose for waiting so long. And I'm 3x more procrastinatey than anyone I know.

You should have just printed it and driven to the PO if you were worried.

Its only an issue if you don't have a refund coming.

"If you have a refund, there is no penalty for filing late. Penalties are calculated on the amount due. Since there is no amount due, there is no penalty"

I owe, but not much -about $1,300. so even if I'm 1 day late, which it looks like I may be, my penalty will be around $100. stupid mistake but not end of world. according to IRS

"1.5 IRS Procedures: Collection Procedural Questions

What kind of penalties and interest will I be charged for paying and filing my taxes late?

Interest, compounded daily, is charged on any unpaid tax from the due date of the return until the date of payment. The interest rate is the federal short-term rate plus 3 percent. That rate is determined every three months. "

I believe it is far less than $100, as the ~6% rate is an annual number. So divide by 365.

He gets hit with three penalties

Failure to file (~$65.00)
Failure to pay (~$6.50)
Interest (~$1.00)
