Default D.O.E. vs Kamehameha Schools

Video

(Kelly Hu is a graduate of Kamehameha)

Curious how the board feels about Kamehameha's admissions policy being challenged. Besides needing top grades and test scores, the school requires one to have Hawaiian blood to get in. The school receives no federal funding.

Does it receive any state or local funding or is it entirely privately financed/tuition based?

Bluff,

From the posted website:

Kamehameha Schools uses its own resources to improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians through education. It neither seeks nor receives federal funding.

All,

I have no problem with this schools admission policy if it indeed is completely financed through private means.

Kamehameha schools was established in the will of a native Hawaiian princess. So the estate owns a bunch of prime real estate and is worth $5+ Billion. They have no need for outside funding, nor do they accept any.

Ok, I just wanted an outside perspective because I'm pretty pissed about this being challenged (I'm an alum) and I didn't know if I was overly biased. The Hawaiian culture is dwindling as it is and this is one of the last things that we as a people have.

I don't have a problem with it. But I'm pretty sure they are allowed to sue on this basis. For instance you can't have an all white golf course.

BluffThis, you and I agree on something!

However, from an (diversity in) education perspective, the policy is likely not that great. But all that means is I would not send my kids to a school that practices exclusionary policies. If they want to have a school like that -- go ahead.
