Default Changing Tags

I noticed that songs which are MP3 have an artist tag, and those that are MP4 do not. I want to change/add an artist to my MP4 files, but it does not show "artist" tag if it is a MP4 file. (it shows title, author, etc.).

So what can I do? Can I change the file extension to MP3? Or will this screw something up?

How are you trying to edit the tags? With Windows Explorer? iTunes?

No. Yes. (Respectively.)

right clicking my computer/explore and then selecting the file name (song), and clicking on properties. If the song is an MP3 it lists artist, album, etc. If it is any other type of file it lists author, comments, etc. So...

If I have a file/song called "I walk alone" and for whatever reason the artist is blank, there is no way for me to make the artist "Green Day".

I'm not sure how iTunes knows who the artist/band is. It must be tagged somehow. Even those songs that don't have an artist listed, iTunes somehow knows who it is. Usually... Sometimes it doesn't. That's why I'm looking to figure out know how to change it or add it. Any ideas?

You could try a program like media monkey. I used it to tag some .wav files I had (after they were converted).

Thanks. That's what I thought. Would you know how these files are designated to show either artist or author? Why won't MP4's allow you to create an author?

The thing is, I can't figure out how these files are even named. You can have a file called "Break on Through - The Doors" and somehow iTunes knows the song title is "Break on Through", and the artist is "The Doors. But only somtimes...

Sometimes it just lists "Break on Through". Sometimes you can have a number in front of the song such as, "01- Break on Through - The Doors". And sometimes the number will appear in iTunes, and sometimes it won't. Even though it's IDENTICAL!

If you don't know, can you suggest where I might learn more about this? Thanks.

That's kinda weird that that's happening with the same file. If I had to guess, I'd say it had multiple formats of tag (like id3v2 and id3v1), but I dunno.

I would suggest using Tag&Rename and just getting all your (MP4) tags in order with it.

Check out '1st MP3 Tag Editor'. It has a free trial period. It makes editing and renaming the tags and files very easy.
