Default Microwave reheat: how does it know?

So my microwave has things like "reheat" and "popcorn" that always work perfectly. How the hell does this work? I already googled...

Uh, simple guess, they put a bag of popcorn or something to reheat, the determined how long to cook a perfect bag of popcorn/reheat the item, and then programmed a button to do it w/o the trial and error.

negative. The reheat deal reheats for different times depending on how much it needs. You can do broth-y soup or like lasagna, both come out perfect.

There is an infrared temperature sensor that determines when the item is hot in the middle?

How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop? The world may never know...

I've never used any pre programmed microwave button because I always thought they'd just be programmed times and couldn't get it right. The idea of this is blowing my mind.
