Re: Stardust Las Vegas closing 12:01am 11/1/06
That's a shame for many reasons, not the least of which is that the Stardust has the best sign on the strip. A masterpiece of pure old-time Vegas flash and kitsch.

It's going to be in the Neon Museum. I read in the RJ that the Stardust is to be imploded on Feb 22, 07--Washington's B'day. I'm going to miss the place a lot. It was the first room I played in regularly after moving here in May. Lots of memories for people in that old girl, and fewer places for the low-rollers, alas. I guess this one going down is right up there with the Sands. As for the Frontier, who cares. Get rid of the awful Circus Circus, where nobody who goes there tips. Low rollers, indeed. [/ QUOTE ] Wikipedia says: The hotel and casino's website reports that it will be closing on November 1, 2006, to make way for a new hotel and casino. The building itself is scheduled to be dynamited at midnight on December 31st, 2006. I sure hope that's right because I included that date in my Magazine article (which is now up). |

I don't think it is, actually. I have found that Wiki is often inaccurate when it comes to Vegas dates/history/schedules.
The last time one was imploded on new years was Hacienda (now Mandalay Bay). Although it would be interesting, all reports and news that I have read locally say it will be imploded in early Spring 2007. |

Does anybody know if there is a service or something that you can use where if you bid on any of the lots online that would pick up and ship the stuff to you?
Maybe some sign, photo, or some kind of collectible. But since Great American doesn't ship, and if you don't live nearby, there really isn't a way for you to bid and pick it up if you get something. |

Re: Stardust Las Vegas closing 12:01am 11/1/06
Any dates on the Frontier closing/implosion? I'll actually be there in late December, and that place holds a special place in my heart--my family used to stay in the tower suites there every summer (back when the tower in the back was considered "new"). Dirty and old or not, it's my earliest memories of Las Vegas.

Re: Stardust Las Vegas closing 12:01am 11/1/06
Casino Death Watch is a cool website to watch for closings and casino history, etc.
The coolest closing was the Castaways (the original one on the Strip). I was there the final night of operation and they had drawings for the fixtures It was like a party, even though many would miss it. Contrast that with the final night of the Dunes. I could have thrown a football around the place and not hit anyone. The staff on duty looked like they couldn't wait to leave. I will miss the Stardust. I played there while on a family trip in 1974 (8th grade). Had on my leisure suit and sunglasses. Played Blackjack with Kennedy half dollars. If they knew I was underage, they certainly didn't care. In 1978 I saw the Carpenters perform there. I'm getting verclempt now. Talk amopngst yourselves. Here's a topic: Who gives a rat's azz about Sklansky and Snyder's debate Bye Stardust RIP |
