Default Things to do in Melbourne

Despite living in Australia and having been to Melbourne twice, i've never actually been anywhere there besides the casino / crown hotel.

I'm thinking about moving there on a whim because it seems like the most interesting city in Australia (certainly compared to Perth which is nice, but tiny), but will probably fly there first to check it out and see if i'd like to live there.

Any recommendations for good places to listen to music (especially live bands, of basically all genres), information on best areas to live, weird things to do, farmers markets, whatever, would be much appreciated.

The Espy in St Kilda is the #1 place, I reckon.

Obviously, in a city of over 4million people, there are a bunch of other places too.

South-East Melbourne are the "nicest" suburbs.

What sort of living are you after? There are plenty of city and city-fringe apartments that have just been completed in Docklands and Southbank areas.

farmers markets,

Queen Vic Market; South Melbourne Market; Prahran Markets are the biggest three, I think.

Let me know what else you're after...

Vlado's steakhouse. I went there with Josem and TeddyFBI and we all agreed we could die happy after that meal. It's considered the best in the city and was AU$80 or $100 for the prix fixe menu.

Best areas to live:
Toorak and certain areas of brighton
I personally know of 3 sales in toorak in the past few weeks of houses over 10million dollars.

Places for you to check out where to live (knowing nothing about your financial situation) I'd have to say check out South Yarra and St Kilda are nice. Alot of the apartments on the Docklands are far too overprices for what you're getting.

Music:
The espy as josem said is pretty good, also prince of wales has some pretty good acts. Also prince is one of the biggest/most popular clubs in melbourne. I'd say night life around the beach is good, fitzroy street in particular

Weird things to do:
Struggling to think of many of these actually, tried to look as Josem's ideas for inspiration but that didn't help much.

I guess in regards to food along with Vlados you could check out the Flower Drum, probably one of the best Chinese restuarants in Australia. Very expensive though, around $160 a head if i recall, I'm going there in a fortnight for my 18th should start starving myself now so i can fill myself up!

Any more queries feel free to shoot them over here

Is there an area in Melbourne city like Northbridge in Perth or Kings Cross in Sydney? EG where all the foreign food is, lots of nightlife, bars, etc, higher crime rate?

To be fair, the cross isn't really where the foreign food is. More just the trendy clubs, the titty bars, and the adult bookstores.

On Queen Street is an Indian restaurant called Nirankar. If you like Indian food, you should enjoy this place.

Dude, you want to leave Perth and go find another version of Northbridge?? That zone was one of the reasons that I left Perth to begin with.

I loved Melbourne, but I was last there a long, long time ago.
