Default Barrel firing

Often in small stakes games I'll make a cbet after raising preflop and get check-called by someone who makes any kind of a draw. I have even noticed that they'll sometimes call on the turn with a flush draw or OESD. I have been toying around with checking behind on the turn and when checked to on the river, making a potsized bet if no flush or straight cards came.
What do you guys think? Is the turn bet or river bet better?
Do you fire both?
I think the turn check, river bet does a couple things. It keeps the pot small against all those slowplaying bastards, and allows you to know whether or not the flush or straight card comes.
I play 1/2 if that matters.
