What is second life? Im gunna have to check this out.

[/ QUOTE ]

Second Life is like a virtual reality world where you can go and interact with others. It has everything that the regular world has, including an economy. If you want you can sign up, buy some "linden dollars" and open a night club. You pay a programer to build the club for you or you can build it yourself. You pay them linden $$ and that money can be converted to real money. Apparently there are a lot of programmers making a killing by building real estate and other stuff for people. At the club you open you can host bands and charge a cover. Its a regular business, but it takes place in a 3D internet world. Its really crazy, but I've heard like about it like 7 or 8 times in the last week, and all from mainstream sources. People are making millions building VR crap.

I signed up just to see, and I thought that it sucked. But appartently there are a lot of people who spend all day and night there. And there is a lot of money to be made. I listened to an interview with the CEO of Linden Labs (the creators), and he said that there are a lot of big corporations taking an interest and setting up shop. For instance, Reuters has a correspondent working FULL TIME only on Second Life news, and Reuters 'publishes' the Second Life news paper. Amazing.

I get the feeling that second life is the biggest marketing scam ever.

There marketing dept just pushes out ridiculous unsubstantiated stories to the mainstream media about people becoming millionaires in their game, and how everyone is doing.

I do not know a single person that actually uses second life.

I used to run a casino in everquest (yes I was one of those [censored] spamming in the bazaar). At the time, it was not uncommon for me to make 100k plat in a day (worth about $200 a day at the time).

However, in 2nd life, there are lots of people running a casino. Without actually playing the game, I cannot say if the same potential (or more) exists here. But I did read one thing about the game. When you first start out, they limit how much Lindex$ (or whatever they are called -- the in game currency) you are allowed to transact at a day and month at a time. The longer you have played the game, the more you can exchange. I have not looked into these rules deeply, but it sounds to me liek you have have to become a long-time player before you will be able to profit greatly from this game. Not to say that it can't be done, but it will most likely be too much effort for 99% of the players out there.

EDIT: For anyone who is interested, I ran the following game in everquest. The player would roll a 1000-sided dice (1 - 1000 at random). If they rolled 650 or above they won (the bet paid even money), if the rolled 990 or above they won triple their bet -- this was basically a sucker bet that convince some people to play -- but only took about 2% from my bottom line -- but the amoutn of play it genereated made it more than worth it).

I had about a 12% edge. This is huge. Players could come up to me and be winning after 1, or 2, maybe even 3 bets. But after that, a 12% edge is so huge I was almost guaranteed to win. Most players would come up and play with the intention of betting several times in a row (which means the would almost certainly go broke). A few people would get lucky and win a single bet and run away (which I would then advertise as winners to everyone else, to make more people try their luck at my casino ). I would have made plenty with even a 5% edge, but due to the market I could easily get away with a 12-15% edge and people would flock to my casino. The same can be said in real life I guess.

I guess your gut feeling about Second Life's marketing department is much more substantiated and trustworthy than the mainstream media? I think that you've got to pay attention when Reuters, the biggest news media company in the world, has devoted a salaried, full time, respected journalist to run a Second Life newspaper. Do you think that Reuters is confused about the market potential?

Well, maybe, but I logged on the other day and there were 1.8 million others on Second Life as well. So it looks like a pretty substantial market to me. Even if you can't make a sustained profit, I think that its clear that you could make some money on here. I don't really care as I wouldn't spend my time on Second Life to begin with. I just thought maybe some of the more technically inclined might benefit in some way. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is an opportunity here that some on this forum might be able to take advantage of. There is very little downside and the potential for a significant upside, howevery short-lived it may be.

After awhile, I got so burnt out from doing the same thing over and over in the game, I couldn't even bring myself to login anymore. I just had to quit. Looking back, what I should have done was hire people to run the casinos for me, instead of trying to do everything myself. My problem is I can't trust other people enough to give them access to my accounts.

Hrmmmmm I guess "others on" means "others that ever logged on at least once in history".
