The characters weren't painted in any depth, but to be fair there were so many of them that it would have been a 9 hour movie if they were. And it probably would have changed the pacing radically -- the movie was hectic and that reflected the confusion and pressure the guys were under. If we got more into their home and private lives and such, the movie would lose that sense of tension and confusion, and how suddenly things went so bad.

Not to say the movie was perfect -- it can even get a little dry here and there, partly because of the shallow characterizations. But I'm not sure you could get a lot of extra characterization in there without substantially changing the direction and feel of the movie. I'm not sure if I said any of that well, but I hope you know what I mean here.

That as well as the movie was, IMO, not about deep character development. It was a battle movie, and I appreciated the lean approach.
