Friend wants me to help her get a job at my company
Normally, I would just do it. Unfortunately, she has screwed me before and I don't want to look bad at work. I gave her a referral to a place I worked 8 years ago. I told her upfront it was a crappy job, and that my boss was a difficult jerk. She said no prob, she would stick it out, just really needed a job. First time she gets frustrated (2 weeks in to job) she walks out. No notice, no explanation. Made me look bad.
I realize this was quite a while ago, and she may have grown up, but she has had trouble holding down jobs her entire life. She also has a short fuse, and I don't want to be embarrassed referring her to have her walk out or go off on someone. She has been looking for a job for a while now, and cannot find one and is desperate. What to do here? The last time we talked, she said "seriously, I have grown up, I just need a chance, blah blah blah". I don't want to go out on a limb to get screwed here. She also asked for a referral to the vet once a while back. The policy, esp for new people, is to pay the day of service. She used my name and asked to be billed. Because I had a longstanding history they let her do this, and she never paid them. They asked me for an updated phone number for her, said the number she gave was wrong and she never paid. I was, of course, mortified that she did this. I paid the bill (only $60 but still) and told her about it. She said, oh, thanks. Never offered to pay me back. Do I give her the benefit of the doubt one more time? |

You'll never hear from her again. See: I bettered your life, you're welcom, no need to thank me. |

Re: Friend wants me to help her get a job at my company
I am friends with her because she has been there for me during difficult times. She has a messed up background (crappy childhood with alcoholic parents, etc.) and has really low self esteem. She has never been what I would consider responsible, but if I were in a jam and called I know she would help me out in a heartbeart. That is why I am conflicted about this. The thing is, I have been at this job a while, and do not want to mess anything up, I like it here. I am also planning on trying for a promotion when the next opening comes up, and think with my work history there I have a good shot at it.
