Default Dog The Bounty Hunter: Racist?

Duane "Dog" Chapman has found himself in some hot water over comments made in a private phone call to his son Tucker.

[ QUOTE ]
A&E has suspended production on its hit reality series Dog the Bounty Hunter in light of some—to put it mildly—racially insensitive remarks its star looks to have made during a phone conversation with his son Tucker, a recording of which was duly posted online by The National Enquirer.

Here's the audio Probably NSFW. Definitely lower your volume if you're in a cubicle.

So, here's my questions.

#1) Is an apology ever acceptable here?

#2) Should this be taken more lightly since it was a private, tapped phone conversation, and not a public statement.

I'm really shocked at the content of this tape, but then again, I was never meant to hear it. Opinions?

It's kind of ironic that the conversation that ruined his career was about not wanting his career to be ruined because he didn't want his son's GF to hear them using the N word and telling someone and then having the media blow it up.

I'm curious as to what people think about using words such as the N-word in private conversation. I personally don't care, but then again I'm not offended by the word, even if I was black I'm not sure if I would be, especially if it wasn't aimed towards me, but then again I rarely get offended by anything...

One more thing, were the comments actually racist? I know the word is offensive to a lot of black people, but the taped conversation made it pretty clear to me, at least, that he wasn't trying to say "all black people are N..." Some people use that word to describe the worst types of black people, right or wrong, I don't think that's racist. The types of people Dog deals with on his show are pretty much some of the worst people from their respective races, so I could see him using that type of language without racist intent.
