Default Portable Ice Maker

I just wanted to share with everyone this magnificent purchase I recently made. I present to you Mr. Freeze:

Mr. Freeze

I bought this bad boy for my office and it's cranking out ice as I write this. The mechanical process it goes through while it's making the ice is also something to behold, so not only do you have lots of fresh ice you have some moving sculpture around. I've walked into the office kitchen a couple of times to find someone just standing there staring at Mr. Freeze work his icy magic. All for only $200!

Only drawback: it doesn't store a ton of ice, so if you need to have a lot on hand you need to transfer it to another container and put it in a freezer. But other than that this thing is so choice.

Does it make ice quietly?

I could really do with one of these things, but keep different hours to everyone else in my house. It looks like the sort of machine that would make the walls shake...

First thing I thought of too. Ice makers can be really noisy.

Also, how long does the ice take to make, and how noisy is it just to keep it cool? I also wonder at the power needed.

1) It's not intensely noisy, but the fan/compressor aren't exactly quiet. So there's no loud crashing or anything, but pretty constant fan noise while running. In my office kitchen it's not bad, I think it would bug me if I was sitting in a room with it.

2) Each batch of ice, maybe 15-20 cubes, takes about 10 minutes. Three batches fill the interior basket. It is not a freezer/refrigerator, so it's not running to keep cool. I'm sure it sucks energy like there's no tomorrow when it's making the ice.

3) It's not hooked up to a water line, you pour the water in. All the directions say you shouldn't have it outside, because it works best in moderate temperatures. If it's not too hot out you could definitely bring it outside and bring it back in when you're done as long as you can plug it in. They do mentioned letting the refrigerant "settle" after moving it, so not sure if that's a factor.

Sounds like you could blow it out from the heat if you keep it in the sun.
