Why is Len Bias getting so many votes?

I never saw him play, but I can't imagine that he was so incredibly good you can say he's the biggest waste of talent without ever playing in the nba. Like if Carmelo died before he got to play, I doubt he would win this poll. It's just that the story of Bias has been romanticized over the years that people thought he was going to be the next Jordan or something. Someone like Richard Dumas would be a better pick.

bias was an amazing talent; i think he's one of the few legit names on this list.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, looking at the list Bias almost with no doubt would have been a star in the NBA also, the guy was amazing...so I voted for him

Default None of the above

Marvin Barnes - and it isn't even close.

Honorable mention to Derek Sanderson

I like how you come into this thread, name someone who virtually noone will know, then add "and it's not even close" without caring to mention anything else about him. Bravo.

I suspect that anyone born before 1980 with friends or a father who was a sports fan in the mid 70's will know those names.

If you know who Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is, Barnes is from the same era.

it has nothing do with suspecting people already know. It's all about sounding cool.

And by all accounts, it was ONE night of binging, not a habit that killed him. Similar to a fluke car accident or something. Really hard to call it "wasted" talent

[/ QUOTE ]

This is correct, as I stated earlier, when I called it (his death) an anomoly.

Nobody does one really stupid thing one night and thinks "Man, here I am getting bombed on something I've never really done before, at least not to this extent. Boy am I wasting away so much talent." In other words, it's not like he had months of degenerative behavior on which to reflect. I don't think in that one night he had a chance to "realize" anything, or have any kind of epiphany. It was probably more like "holy *$## I feel good...man I'm really effed up tonight. wow. I wonder if KFC's open."

and about having strong opinions.

One last comment. With the greats, they're always remembered long after they're gone as the records keep the memory alive.

With the wasted talents, once 20 or so years pass, the only people who remember them are those who saw them play. One could argue that Marvin Barnes was as talented as Michael Jordan, but his propensity for drug use, robbery and carrying guns on airplanes ruined his career.

If you never saw him play, you wouldn't know that. I know who every person on the original list is, and IMO, Barnes was a far greater waste of talent than any of them.

The fact that the person who replied to me is too young to recognize the name Marvin Barnes is completely irrelevant to my opinion.
