Hoo boy. It is THE big racial hangup. It was solidly established in white folklore long before Birth of a Nation. You've heard, haven't you, that many people have a hangup about black men dating white women? This is much of what's behind it. It's what made Guess Who's Coming to Dinner such a daring movie in the 60s. There are cruddy little private segregation schools all across the South that were set up in large part so Southern Belles would never have to sit next to a black boy.

I'm well aware of the history of this country. I wasn't born then, and was brought up to judge people by their character and content, not the color of their skin. I lived my entire life on a street where all my neighbors were latino and asian. I went to schools where there were very few other caucasians. I work in probably the most ethnically diverse workplace in the world. I play poker at Commerce and Hawaiian Gardens and Bike where it seems the entire planet intersects.

Needless to say, what you are indicating...doesn't ever really enter into my thinking. And I don't assume it enters into the thinking of others. Do I sometimes see a black person on the street and think "ohh...thug"? Yes. Of course. In context. But if I see the black guy as a checkout guy at the Albertsons in the same light? No. Even if he has cornrows and tattoos? Again no. Would I flinch if this guy was dating a white girl? Not one bit. And again, I don't assume anyone else does.

If this type of thing is prevalent amoung caucasians, I'm blissfully unaware.
