Re: Misleading shots in film
My first thought is a scene I've heard a few people talk about. In the very beginning of Star Wars (IV) when they are about to board the cruiser the camera rests on one older soldier as he stares at the door. The shot is a little longer than you usually see on extras. Seconds later after they burst in you see him die. People have expressed their thoughts that they thought he would be a main character in the film (for a few seconds at least).

Re: Misleading shots in film
At the beginning of Saving Private Ryan, we see the old man walking through the cemetery at Normandy, then the camera pushes in tight on his face, then there's a dissolve or fade to Tom Hanks' face, giving the impression that it is the Hanks character at the cemetery, when in reality, it's Ryan.
Is that what you are talking about ? |

Re: Misleading shots in film
Okay, this is TV and not film but we had this in this seasons last episode of Lost. Jack was having a "flashforward" instead of the usual "flashback" and to sell it as a flashback he twice refered to his father as being still alive but we know he isn't (at least presently or in the future). I was feeling it was some sort of curveball as I was watching it.

Re: Misleading shots in film
I think the opening shot of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where you think you're looking at the back of Indy, but it's someone else, qualifies.
Also, there's a case that the first 20 minutes of Psycho is one long mislead of what the film is about is one. Also, there's a number of Mario Bava films where you seem to witness something like a murder, but it unravels to be something else as the story proceeds. And there's countless horror films where the scene is building to a scare which either happens sooner/later than you expect, or sometimes doesn't happen at all. |
