So dealers in the U.S pay for their training? Also, anyone knows if there is a difference in the salary depending on what games you still? BJ, AR, PB and LP?

[/ QUOTE ]

Poker and pit games have nothing to do with each other. Pit dealers and poker dealers often dont' see each other. Generally dealers make min wage plus tokes (there a re a few palces that allow dealers to make slightly more than min wage).

"salary" is the same

Free school + 1 year experience > any school + 1 week experience

[/ QUOTE ]

This is not true. When I used to hire poker dealers in Las Vegas the ones out of school could usually get hired. The ones from the east (mostly from Foxwoods, I only remember a couple of AC dealers auditioning and I hired one of those) were either referred to a dealing school or told what they needed to work on if they were close to passing the audition.

The really good dealers are making up to $75k in Colorado. I think that's gotta be the top end, though.

Gosh, I clicked on this topic ready to wince in horror. Thank God it didn't degenerate to where this topic could've degenerated.

Anyway, as photoc said, the range is wide and large, and dependant on person to person. You can have two people pushing each other in a string for the exact same shift, going to the exact same tables (with minor differential), and the two people could come out with two totally different numbers on the day as far as what they made in tips. It just depends.

Me? I do well enough. Although I learned today that getting a loan involves some trickery since what's written on the check (~min wage + tip compliance, which in 95% of the rooms in Vegas is dirt low) doesn't match what's actually being made.

Finally, the reason floors are found in the box by people is because at that time the room was short on dealers.

Tell that Milwaukee dealer to move to Vegas where the starting LVMPD salary is $46K going to $48K upon graduating from the academy with another 4% after 6mo and another 4% after 6mo more. Average LVMPD cop makes $75K including overtime and shift differentials and whatnot, and folks with 10 years average $83K and 15 years is good for $88K. The highest paid officers in the county made >$160K by working enormous overtime (we're talking ordinary officers, not the execs). They may shaft the teachers out here, but the taxpayer take care of the cops.

[/ QUOTE ]

Most PD's require a Bachelors degree. Poker dealers also don't have drunks throwing up on them as much as cops do, not to mention a lower likelihood of the "customers" coming at them with a razor.

OTOH, as was said in a movie "where else you going to get paid to shoot people?".

The amount dealers make various from place to place in AC. The Borgata dealers make ALOT more than they make at Resorts or Trump Marina.

You also have to take into account that most casinos don't offer benefits for Part Time dealers (most dealers are designated as Part Time). \

Also, as far as poker goes, it all depends on how good you are. If you suck you're going to get less tips. I'll say the average poker dealer in AC makes about 40k, though i'm aware of some really good (or some really hot) dealers that can pull in 100k+.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is correct. 20-25/hr is pretty reasonable for a given dealer in a given house here. Borgata is light years ahead of the others in terms of toke rate though.

Question:
Are you more likely to tip a quick dealer (one who forces players to act on their hand quickly and could come across as a little rude) or the patient dealer who gives players as much time as they need and so has better customer service skills?

Is tipping based on the level of customer service or is it how a dealer does their job?

I am from Australia and tipping is illegal in our country. Dealers at the casino get about $40K - $50K a year plus benefits. Hence, the reason for my question.

Cheers

In the poker world, good customer service IS keeping the game moving, not being slow and patient. You might have to get on a particular player sometimes, but you have to think about the greater good - other players are waiting to play. Also, you tend to make more the more hands you can deal.

For a tough decision in a big pot, or at higher limits, sure, you can allow a little extra as consideration. But generally you have to keep the game moving along (especially at lower limits). Forget about going into a 2 minute staredown at 1/2 NL table.

YOu can be tactful and polite, but long delays and slow games are bad customer service.

You'd be amazed what dealers make at Bay 101. The waitresses make even more, but they work a little harder.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, that's why you always find them sitting in the 20 and 40 games. I like to think of it as the live poker form of rakeback. :-)

One of the dealers at Sahara came to Vegas from Seattle and said he took a pretty big pay cut doing so. Seems the tokes are a lot more generous there. Well... at least at Sahara (no surprise there).

id tell em to also consider LAPD, or BHPD, LAPD starts from 46-52k, but realistically there is so much overtime to go around, most of them make near the 100k range and over, for regular street cops. Also, LAX cops..there was a normal, standard airport cop, who made 269k last year including overtime (they were talking about him to say why LAPD should take over the airports and the airport PD is wasting money). Beverly Hills starts @ 80k, and with overtime, 100k+ is so very easily attainable. The cops are not as poor as some think, at least in major cities...
