i've never had a cat that didn't instinctively use the box

actually, i used to leave my door cracked open so my cats could go in and out, and one day i come home and there is one of the neighborhood cats inside using the box, wtf?

I assume you're planning to get it fixed. Male cats post fixing >>>>>> female cats post fixing. Females get cranky and bite a lot. Males just get lazy.

In a 1000 square foot apartment, if your cat doesn't make it to the litter box, he is probably ill and should be taken to the vet. (Unless you're not good about scooping it out...cats are finicky about that kind of thing.)

4. If he sounds anything like the cat I had that looked that way as a kid, I'd call him Squeaky. But I'm guessing that's not poggy enough for you.

Names I like:

Thirteen
Pogglesworth (allows you to call him Pog or Worth or Worthless depending on his personality and behavior)
T.R.
AlphaCat (bonus for ease of naming BetaCat)
