Default Question about scoring a TD w/ less than 2 mins.

Wouldn't it be better to run the ball out at the 1 yard line or get tackled and take time off the clock before punching the ball into the endzone? How many times do you see a game where one team scores but leaves 1-2 mins. on the clock giving the opponent a chance to win? Now I know no NFL coach would ever do that nor tell his players to run out at the 1, but would it be +EV to do so?

I think you should do this if a FG would win the game, but you should NEVER give up a TD if thats what you need to take the lead.

Yea I agree for the most part, but look at what happened in the Eagles game today. The same thing w/ the Jets-Colts game a few weeks ago.

I'm reminded of the Patriots - Colts game a few years ago where Edgerrin James was stuffed at the goal line as time expired. One yard rushing TDs are not automatic in the NFL.

I really wish Westbrook would have stood at the goal line for 10 seconds until a Buc decided to chase after him. And then stepped into the end zone.

Edit: Normally, you should not wait, you should score the touchdown. But there was no one around Westy and he could have run some time off, which is a rare situation.

I'm assuming you mean they need to score a TD to take the lead and will lose if they don't.

I think it changes based on a few factors, most importantly:
1) What down it is
2) How good you are in the red zone
3) How much time is left on the clock
4) How many timeouts your opponent has

You know the clock stops when you go out of bounds, right? So you've spent no time by doing that. Then you don't want to do a kneeldown, because you'll *lose* yardage. And you'll run hardly any time off the clock by spiking the ball or intentionally throwing an incomplete pass. So do you have your RB deliberately dive short of the goalline a couple times? What if he gets stuffed for a loss on the next play?

As someone said, it might be the right play if you only need a FG, but even then I think it's better to take the TD when you can get it.

Also, if you "only need a fg" then by scoring a td, your opponent will now need to score a td to win instead of a fg.
